Hematopoietic stem cells differentiate into multiple lineages of lymphoid and myeloid cells that collaboratively enable functional versatility of immune system. Among them, dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized antigen presenting cells (APCs) and essential mediators of tolerance and immunity. Two closely related myeloid lineages with distinct roles in innate and adaptive immunity, i.e. monocyte and plasmacytoid DC lineages, branch off along the DC developmental pathway in the bone marrow. Dr. Liu is investigating the molecular mechanisms regulating divergence between monocyte and DC lineages in the steady state and under viral infection. In parallel, we are studying development, homeostasis and function of cDCs in non-lymphoid organs, such as a cDC population at the “gates� to the central nervous system.
