| Description | This rotation is most applicable to students interested in learning more about neurosurgery, in preparation for a career in the clinical neurosciences [Neurosurgery or Neurology]. During an intensive rotation, students will receive further exposure to clinical neurosurgery and basic neuroscience. The clerkship will enhance the student's ability to do a pertinent history and exam and formulate a differential diagnosis and plan of evaluation, including the need for special diagnostic procedures. Pre- and post-operative neurosurgical problems will be managed. Exposure to neurosurgical procedures will help the student gain appreciation for the dynamic interplay of normal and pathological anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology; the modification of these forces; and patients' reactions to such changes. Format: Students will participate as subinterns and will be assigned to an attending preceptor and resident team. They will attend outpatient clinics; assist in day-to-day inpatient and operative care of neurosurgical patients; take regular night call; and participate in scheduled teaching activities. Learning Objectives By the end of this elective, students should be able to: - evaluate outpatients with a wide range of neurosurgical problems; - assist in the operating room with neurosurgical procedures; and - demonstrate improved knowledge of patient care, neuroanatomy, and surgical pathologies of the nervous system. Assessment Methods: 1. Direct Observation: All students will be directly observed by an attending and/resident. 2. Presentation: All students on this rotation are expected to give a 10- to 12-minute presentation on a research/clinical topic of their choice. This talk will be given on a Thursday morning as part of weekly Grand Rounds. Students will receive ongoing feedback throughout the elective via interactions with both residents and attendings. In addition, they will receive midcourse verbal and end of course written evaluations. Evaluations will be performed by the attending staff and residents together, considering the student's entire course performance.
