For postdocs and graduate students, this presentation followed by Q&A will present the myriad employment options for scientists of the 21st Century. Where to work, how to get there, and what to do now to prepare for one of many career options. The workshop will cover different career trajectories including the traditional academic research position, the liberal arts college position, and interdisciplinary options such as science writing, science policy, and working in industry or government. The focus will be what you can do now to ensure a job later.
Katayoun Chamany is an Associate Professor of Biology and founder of the Interdisciplinary Science Program at Eugene Lang College, The New School for Liberal Arts where she received the Distinguished University Teaching Award. She is an active member of the Faculty for the 21st Century of Project Kaleidoscope, a national organization focused on undergraduate science education reform, serves as a reviewer for the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and Life Sciences Education, and is a Leadership Fellow for Science for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities. She has developed a module based curriculum titled Cell Biology for Life that accompanies Molecular Biology of the Cell, (http://www.garlandscience.com/textbooks/cbl/ The stem cell module from this curriculum has been adopted by faculty at a wide array of research universities and teaching colleges and is part of a larger NSF stem cell research training grant proposal with Stanford and Harvard. She has led workshops on alternative careers in science, faculty development on innovative teaching methods, and published articles in Life Sciences Education and The Journal of College Science Teaching. She has developed protocols for promotion and tenure and served on over ten search committees.
