Myofascial Release: A Body-Mind-Spirit Approach to Healing & Wellness
September 20 2008 - September 21 2008
Speaker: Kitty Van Sant Holzmer, OTR/L NCMT. This course will enable participants to understand the components of fascia (a slightly mobile form of tough connective tissue that extends without interruption throughout the body in a 3-dimensional web), understand the function of fascia, and identify mechanisms responsible for myofascial restrictions. The course experience is specifically designed to assist participants in observing and identifying myofascial restrictions by cultivating appropriate tactile, kinesthetic, and sensory awareness during practicum sessions. Basic assessment techniques such as visual observation and analysis and evaluation of tactile tissue tension will be taught. The course will also provide participants with hands-on experience of several manual techniques that release restricted fascia throughout the body. All information will be presented in a relaxed and comfortable setting conducive to gaining knowledge that can be immediately used in clinical settings with clients presenting with range of motion limitations, neck pain, back pain, sacral pain, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, scoliosis, temporomandibular dysfunction, and many other diagnoses or functional limitations resulting from myofascial problems.

Working in Early Intervention - Challenging Children, Families, and Environments: An OT Perspective
October 19 2008 - August 28 2008
Speakers: Cathy Deitch, MEd, OTR/L and Wilma J. Dorman, OTR/L.
Have you ever thought that the families you deal with are just as challenging as the children you treat? Have you ever felt lost with regard to helping these families and their children, and wondered where you can find information to guide your intervention with both families and their children? This presentation will review the common challenges faced by families with children receiving services. Presenters will review current occupational therapy treatment approaches that address the child’s functional needs in the context of the family and larger community environments. Participants will have the opportunity to examine and problem solve practical solutions to common early intervention challenges through specific case examples. Communicating effectively with fellow team members, to describe clinical problems and intervention through an occupational therapy lens, will also be an objective of this course.
