Identifying and reducing inappropriate use of medication using Electronic Health Records
Inappropriate medication use is a serious issue of global concern, and leads to excessive cost of care, inadvertent side effects, and increased rates of hospitalization. Despite decades of research in this area, explicit appropriateness criteria are still rare and a conceptual model for objective representation of appropriateness criteria does not exist. This research will propose methods for developing such conceptual model and deploying it in the form of appropriateness criteria targeting medications that are commonly overused. This research will also propose a new method for decision support regarding appropriateness of medications.
